Cornerstone’s faith is…

BIBLICAL

Biblically Christian

Faith at Cornerstone is defined first not by distinctives, but by commonality with Christians everywhere.
We follow the Lord Jesus Christ! He is the only Lord and Savior.

We believe and receive his Scriptures (in the 66 books of the Old & New Testaments) as the infallible, unerring word of God, the sufficient and final standard of faith and practice.

We receive His Word as harmonious with the witness of the historic, Apostolic Christianity proclaimed in the Apostles’ and Nicene creeds.

We further disclose our faith distinctives, not as an act of factional pride or as a “need not apply” sign to any who disagree or wrestle with doubt, but because we believe that transparency and the Christian quest for truth are important.

REFORMED

Reformed Protestant

We are a church shaped by the Protestant Reformation, richly inheriting its emphases:

  • Salvation is by divine Grace Alone

  • through Faith Alone

  • in Christ Alone

  • as defined by Scripture Alone

  • all to God’s Glory Alone

(PCA) Presbyterian

Cornerstone is part of the Presbyterian Church in America — a Reformed denomination that avows three distinctives:

  • Faithful to the Scriptures,

  • True to the Reformed Faith

  • Obedient to the Great Commission

As such, Cornerstone has a “Presbyterian” (from the Greek word for “elder”) church structure. Here’s what this means:

  • The congregation exercises its spiritual oversight through elders chosen by the church.

  • These elders care, and care well, for the people of Cornerstone and help us make important decisions as a church.

  • Cornerstone is part of a regional body of churches called the Wisconsin Presbytery

  • We are also part of a national body called The PCA General Assembly

  • Cornerstone’s Statement of Faith is defined by the Westminster Confession of Faith and its Larger and Shorter Catechisms.
All our teaching and preaching is based upon these documents, and we regularly teach classes about them. We believe they are excellent summaries of biblical doctrine that help build up the church in sound teaching.

EVANGELICAL

Gospel & Relationship

These faith declarations compel our holistic embrace of Jesus Christ:

  • Faithful acknowledgment of his truth

  • Personal apprehension of his love

  • Empowered practice of his renewal in our lives

Christ gave us not mere assertions, but his own incarnation, life, ministry, death, resurrection, glory & eternal intercession.
All this to bring us to His Father and dwell with us by His Spirit. “This is eternal life,” he prayed, “that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent” (John 17:3).

This relationship is established, energized, and completed by the “gospel” or good news that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, gave himself on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins, and was raised to impart eternal life to us.

Cornerstone’s vision statement, summarizes our faith well:

Cornerstone is a church renewed by the gospel to serve one another and love Waukesha County.
