Hans & Gretchen Deutschmann
Zlin, Czech Republic

Hans emigrated from Germany in 1958, then attended high school and college in Wisconsin. After serving with the U.S. Army, he obtained his M.A. from the University of Wisconsin, where he and Gretchen met in 1970. Gretchen grew up in Minnesota, graduated from Augustana College in 1969, and pursued graduate studies in Salzburg, Austria, and Madison, Wisconsin. After marrying in 1971, they taught school in Wisconsin. As unbelievers, their marriage almost ended in divorce, but God drew them to Himself in 1972 and later healed their marriage. Desiring to know God and His Word better, Hans attended Covenant Theological Seminary. Graduating with an M. Div. in 1980, the Deutschmanns served as pastor, teachers, youth leaders, and counselors at Cono Christian School in Iowa until 2000 when they answered Godís call to pursue foreign missions. Sensing an urgency to share the gospel with the Czech people, 70-80% of whom claim to be atheists or agnostics, they have joined the MTW church-planting team in Prague and serve in evangelism, teaching, discipling, and counseling. The Deutschmanns have six grown children: Jeremy, Maria, Krista, Selam, Sahlem, and Sebagadis.
